What helps prevent hair loss?

Helpful information and tips

Hair loss – this is a classic term associated with men, which makes us think initially of a receding hairline and a bald patch on the back of the head. Nevertheless, many women are also affected by this problem. We will show you the symptoms, causes and what you can do to combat them.

Hair falling out is not necessarily hair loss

Symptoms of hair loss

Not every hair that falls out means that you are suffering from hair loss. We lose around 100 hairs a day. However, as soon as it becomes significantly more, hair loss could be the cause.

Hair loss, also known as alopecia, is determined by your genes as a rule and is not an exclusively male issue: women can also be affected by hereditary hair loss but do not necessarily go bald.

Do not worry if you discover a few hairs on your pillow; regular loss of hair can fluctuate from day to day and does not necessarily mean that you are suffering from alopecia.

Hair brushes
Consider the quality of brushes and combs when selecting them to care for your hair. Choose natural bristles for instance.

How does hair loss come about?

Causes of hair loss

The causes of hair loss can be difficult to determine. In principle, if you suspect you are losing your hair, it is always advisable to visit your doctor because hair loss is always connected with the individual’s personal situation.

Possible reasons for alopecia:
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Hormone fluctuations (caused by pregnancy or the menopause)
  • Massive disorders in the body (e.g. thyroid disorders, iron deficiency, infectious diseases)
  • Malnutrition (caused by a radical change in eating habits or a strict diet)
  • Unhealthy way of life
  • Stress
  • Skin diseases (sometimes as a result of mycosis)

Sources of Hair Loss
Let’s consider the issue carefully. Choosing the right brushes and combs is essential for caring for your hair.

Treating hair loss

If you have already consulted an expert and hair loss has been confirmed, you should think carefully about the right treatment. This should be done in consultation with your doctor and tailored to your individual needs and those of your body.

Do not expect a miracle cure

Whilst there are many products that promise to combat hair loss, there is no “hair restorer” that causes the symptoms to disappear in a flash. If you suspect that your hair is falling out because you are not eating properly, clarify this immediately by visiting your doctor.

You can also ensure that you have a balanced lifestyle, consciously relax and avoid stress – with a bit of luck your hair will start growing healthily again.

The correct way to prevent hair loss:
  • Drink enough. You should always consume 1.5 to 2 litres of water every day.
  • Reduce stress where possible. Losing your hair on account of stress is scientifically proven – it can be prevented by consciously relaxing. Find out more about relaxation techniques for your inner equilibrium.
  • Strengthen your hair! Silica, biotin and B vitamins can help to prevent hair loss. These are available as nutritional supplements and not only strengthen your hair, but also your nails and connective tissues.

Consult an expert

If you suspect hair loss, do not self diagnose – always go to a doctor

Important information: This article contains only general tips, and should not be used for diagnosing or treating yourself and is no substitute for a visit to the doctor.

Just because you feel that you are losing more hair than usual, do not panic, as the normal rate of hair loss can fluctuate. However, if you suspect and are worried that you are suffering from hair loss, then speak to your GP or a consultant so that the condition can be treated professionally.

Please note
